ABBA legends' Q&A 'shut down' for medical emergency at starry Voyage anniversary (2024)

Abba Voyage: Trailer released for revolutionary concert

ABBA legends Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson were interrupted during a Q&A at the second anniversary of the Voyage show at the custom built ABBA Arena in London when a member of the audience had a medical emergency. The legendary duo were answering questions from celebrity guests and fan club members when there was a sudden commotion to the left of the arena.

The incident happened around 15 minutes into the session. While the fans were screaming and cheering for the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest winning stars, it took a moment for people to realise that one group of people were actually signalling for help.

When the moderator of the chat understood what was going on, he announced the emergency and as soon as the staff realised the situation, they sprang into action. Bjorn stood up from his seat, looking concerned for the person, while a medic rushed through the crowd on the dancefloor.

They then brought a wheelchair over to the stricken fan and they were taken care of on site while the show carried on. The whole incident took mere minutes to resolve and once Bjorn and Benny realised the fan was being looked after, they continued with the question and answer session.

Guests including Good Morning Britain's Richard Arnold, Little Britain star Matt Lucas, 80s chart topper Rick Astley, Texas singer Sharleen Spiteri and Absolutely Fabulous legend Joanna Lumley all took a moment to share their queries with the songwriting duo.

During the chat, which lasted around 45 minutes, Bjorn took a moment to reflect on the band’s success.

“It’s very, very hard to grasp emotionally that we wrote these little songs and it gave rise to this, and the millions of people we have touched. We know it’s true, but it’s very hard to understand. Maybe impossible.”

Benny agreed chiming in: "I’ve seen the show so many times and I think we look good up there…

"But I have no idea what it really is that makes people have it in them to want to listen to music that was done 50 years ago, 40 years ago, 30 years ago.”

“Back in ’79, I don’t think we ever thought about being listened to in 10 years’ time," Bjorn confessed when discussing their hit record, Happy New Year.

“If you said something like this would happen in 50 years’ time, it would be preposterous, it just doesn’t happen.”

Surprisingly, despite their prolific output, the pair have never collaborated with other artists. Although they wrote Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickinson's number one smash hit I Know Him So Well, which was taken from their musical, Chess.

However, Benny said he would not rule out future collaborations when asked if they would ever work with someone like Dua Lipa or Lana Del Rey. “I would say I will take a look. We have been asked but never done it.”

ABBA Voyage features "ABBAtars" of the band performing 21 of the group’s biggest hits alongside a live band and singers, and has already been seen by two million fans.
