The country’s best female gymnasts will be competing Sunday night at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, in the U.S. championships.

Simone Biles put herself in position to win a ninth national gymnastics title, stringing together four occasionally brilliant rotations to take a massive lead at the U.S. Championships on Friday night. The 27-year-old, eyeing a third Olympic trip this summer, posted an all-around total of 60.450, the highest by any gymnast in the world since the beginning of 2022.
It was also more than three points clear of Skye Blakely in second at 57.050 and Kayla DiCello in third at 56.850. Biles posted the highest score on all four events two months away from the women’s all-around final in Paris on Aug. 1.
Barring injury, she’s all but guaranteed to make the U.S. Olympic team. The question of which other four women will join her, however, likely won’t be sorted out until the waning moments of the Olympic Trials in Minneapolis at the end of June.

“I really feel like she is happy to be here,” Biles’ longtime coach, Cecile Landi, told The Associated Press. “I know she is ready to be done but I think she’s really enjoying it and appreciating every meet she gets to do.”
Shilese Jones, the second-best all-around gymnast in the U.S. behind Biles, pulled out of the championships Friday afternoon, citing a shoulder injury. Jones plans to petition into Olympic Trials, a petition that will almost certainly be granted.
Besides the top three, a few others to watch tonight are Sunisa Lee, the 2020 Olympic champion, and Jordan Chiles, a 2020 Olympian and a three-time world championship medalist.
On the men’s side, Brody Malone completed his comeback from major reconstructive right knee surgery by winning his third U.S. Championships gymnastics title.
Malone finished with an all-around total of 172.300. That was more than two points clear of second-place finisher Fred Richard. Khoi Young was third. The five-man U.S. Olympic team will be picked at the end of Olympic trials in Minneapolis later this month.
