1. Red Bank Catholic 2, 8. Paul VI 1: Sophom*ore right-hander Glen Popes, on the only pitch he threw, got a ground out to second with the bases loaded to earn the save in the defending South A champion Caseys' win over the Eagles.
Paul VI (12-15) did not score in the seventh against relievers Brandon Hendrickson and Popes having four out of the first five batters reach base on two walks and two hit by pitches. However, Hendrickson got a double player ground ball to third in between the second of the two walks and the two hit by pitches.
Junior right-hander Ryan Prior pitched two-hit ball over the first six innings to pick up the win. He struck out 10 and walked four.
A two-run, bases-loaded single with two out in the bottom of the first by sophom*ore Charlie Stumberger plated the Caseys' runs.
Red Bank Catholic had loaded the bases on an error on Matt Brunner's fly ball, a hit by pitch to senior third baseman Sean Griggs and an infield single by sophom*oe Aiden Funk.
The Caseys (17-9) will host No. 5 Immaculata Thursday in a sectional semifinal.
Red Bank Catholic's pitching is really stretched with Thursday's game and the possibility of a sectional final Saturday. Ace Declan Leary is likely done for the season after he sustained an injury in what head coach Buddy Hausmann said was "the Tommy John'' area last Friday in the 13-12 defeat to CBA in the Monmouth County Tournament final. Prior threw 109 pitches Tuesday and is ineligible, under NJSIAA pitching rules until the Non-Public A state championship game on June 6, should the Caseys advance that far.
Freshman right-hander Hunter Beattie, who pitched two innings in relief in the MCT final, is a possibility for the Thursday, as are Popes and Hendrickson.
Senior right-hander and Seton Hall University recruit Steve Svenson has been sidelined all season with a knee injury.

St. Rose took command immediately by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Dom Crudo, a two-run single by Brennan Sherman and an RBI single by James Doster.
St. Rose will play at No. 1 and defending Non-Public B state champion Gloucester Catholic Thursday. Tiernan, St. Rose's ace, because he threw just 46 pitches Tuesday, is eligible to pitch. He can throw up to 104 pitches under the NJSIAA's 150 pitch, five-day rule.
Ranney played the final 3 1/2 games of its season with slugging first baseman Ryan Costello due to a hand injury he sustained May 13 in a Shore Conference Tournament game at Middletown South. Costello finished his season with 14 home runs, one shy of the conference single-season record of 15 set by Middletown South's Joe Stanzione in 2022 and four shy of the state single-season record of 18 set by Los Angeles Angels' star Mike Trout of Millville in 2009 and equaled by Ashton Bardzell of Ramsey in 2014.
