Tatler UK|April 2018TealFind your zeal for teal because it’s not just back – it’s back with blue bells on. The appeal of this teal is partly the feel: satins and silken tassels, sequins and velvet. Spring’s big teal reveal has a party spiel. Fancy-schmancy with a hint of genteel. Bows and epaulettes, sashes and slits. So let out a peal and unseal that zeal. Because we kneel before teal and although it’s surreal, we cannot repeal the real deal… that is teal. PS Even smalls we conceal are also teal. So when it’s time for the big reveal… guess what? Yup, teal.STILL-LIFES: PIXELEYES. PHOTOGRAPH: GETTY IMAGES. EDITED BY FRANCESCA WHITE…1 min
Tatler UK|April 2018THE CHILDRENS’ MAGAZINE PUBLISHERWhen Clementine Macmillan-Scott was a child, Sundays were about reading The Funday Times. For anyone older, it might have been the Children’s Newspaper, which ran from 1919 until 1965. It was the chance discovery of a copy of the latter that inspired Clemmie, 36, to launch Scoop – a monthly magazine created for 8-to-12-year-olds, featuring stories, poetry, illustrations and book reviews. Contributors have included Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell and fantasy novelist Neil Gaiman. Clemmie’s only 14 issues in and the magazine’s readership is soaring, with young fans from places as far away as New Zealand.Macmillan-Scott has grand literary credentials – she is the great-granddaughter of the authors Vita Sackville-West and Sir Harold Nicolson; her grandfather, Nigel Nicolson, co-founded the publishing house Weidenfeld & Nicolson; and her mother, Juliet, has written…1 min
Tatler UK|April 2018THE SPY who loved meCharlotte Bingham has written 40 books. Most of them are not for me. They are popular romantic novels with titles like To Hear a Nightingale and sunsets on the covers. But her 41st is very much for me, and you, and everyone we know. In short, it’s a stone-cold comic classic. It’s a memoir that begins when her father John Bingham, the 7th Lord Clanmorris, asks her for a quiet word. She is 18 and fears he is about to tell her the facts of life. Instead, he says his boring job at the War Office is a cover, and that he is an MI5 spymaster – which explains the incident when his swordstick fell apart at Ascot and other mysteries of her childhood – and recruits her to work…8 min
Tatler UK|April 2018The BookwormReading Matthew Sweet’s latest book is a mindbending experience. And, by God, is it good fun. Operation Chaos tells the story of a group of Vietnam War deserters who sought political asylum in Sweden in the late Sixties and early Seventies. They were treated like rock stars, scoring girls and drugs and front-page newspaper interviews – and even parts in movies. They also formed themselves into a radical political organisation called the American Deserters Committee, which dreamed of revolution, a Viet Cong victory and the end of American imperialism. The turbulence and idealism of the time are skilfully brought to life – draft-card burnings, student riots, Black Panthers, hippies. The scene is peppered with famous faces: Jane Fonda, Catherine Deneuve, Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. Even Stieg Larsson and Abba’s…3 min
Tatler UK|April 2018GadgetsFLOSSTIMENow let’s be clear about one thing. I definitely, 100 per cent, totally floss daily, because that’s what adults do. And you, being adults, also certainly floss daily as well.Which means that the Flosstime is a really great gadget for all of us flossers. For starters, it sticks onto your bathroom mirror and when you tap it, it dispenses 18 inches of floss, which all of us know is the amount of floss you need for a good, classic flossing session. Secondly, the coloured ring then glows for 90 seconds, which – and you don’t need me to tell you this or Google it afterwards – is the amount of time that one flosses for when one flosses, which one does every morning, even when late for work; it isn’t…3 min
Tatler UK|April 2018WHICH MITFORD SISTER ARE YOU?The six Mitford sisters – Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica and Deborah – were the glamorous, scandalous poster girls of their generation. The daughters of the 2nd Lord and Lady Redesdale were born between 1904 and 1920 and were raised in a conveyor belt of homes – Gloucestershire’s Batsford Park, Oxfordshire’s Asthall Manor and, later, the nearby Swinbrook House. The family’s titles reached back to the Norman Conquest and Lord Redesdale sat in the House of Lords. And yet the sisters defied social expectations at every turn, responding, each in their own way, to the shifting political and social climate of the time. But, more importantly, which one are you? Answer the following questions to find out.1 YOU ARE AT A PARTY. AN EX ARRIVES UNEXPECTEDLY WITH THEIR NEW SQUEEZE.…6 min
Tatler UK|April 2018LOST YOUTH?Over dinner in Wiltshire recently, one of the country’s most senior aristocrats despaired about the politics of his children. As guests pushed chicken pie around willow-pattern plates, he told how his daughter and two sons – all of whom have titles – had voted for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour last year. They couldn’t vote Conservative, they had told him; the shame was too great. Besides, the party had nothing to offer young people. What did this mean, he implored. ‘If we can’t inspire the young any more, how can the Conservatives survive?’The question echoes around the country. The average age of Conservative Party members is 72, according to the Bow Group think tank. Brexit was resoundingly the wish of the older generation. The average age of Theresa May’s Cabinet (even with…15 min
Tatler UK|April 2018Lady LAGOSTokini Peterside has a great laugh: raucous, distinctly naughty and very playful. And it erupts in full force when she remembers how she had to spend ‘months’ persuading her father – the founder, at a mere 33, of an investment bank in Nigeria – to let her leave Cheltenham Ladies’ College and go to Westminster. ‘When you asked me about nightclubs, I did that young! I wanted to be in London, and for Nigerian parents, the last thing they want is having their children running around London, going crazy.’ Still, she got her way; there were, after all, relatives in town, ‘looking after me’.‘To an extent…’ I suggest.‘Yes!’ she cries, her laugh bouncing round the Lancaster Gate hotel in which we’re meeting, close to her family’s London base. ‘To an…9 min
Tatler UK|April 2018TOP OF THE MORNINGIf morning had a scent, what would that be? Well, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud has created a fragrance for Louis Vuitton (his eighth) inspired by daybreak, so now we know. There’s mandarin, as cheerful and optimistic as a big glass of orange juice. Jasmine sambac, refined as freshly brewed tea leaves. A whiff of blackcurrant, like proper French jam on a baguette. Magnolia and musk too. It’s gentle yet bracing – like stepping outside on a sunny morning to find the breeze a bit fresher than you expected. It’s called Le Jour Se Lève, it costs £185 for 100ml and it’s guaranteed to make your day smell better. FW…1 min
Tatler UK|April 2018BACK IN BLOOMSBURYOn a small notice next to the entrance of the Bloomsbury hotel there’s an inscription that reads: ‘They lived in squares… they loved in triangles.’The pithy observation, attributed to the American wit Dorothy Parker, captures the infamous behaviour of the Bloomsbury Group, a ragbag of writers, artists and intellectuals who bedhopped their way around the garden squares of central London at the beginning of the 20th century. The area – a swathe of smart Georgian streets that stretches from Holborn to the Euston Road – may not have the street cred of Soho to the south, or the polished sheen of nearby Marylebone. But Bloomsbury has something of its own: a rare and very English thing – a bohemian sensibility, a mix of diamond-bright intellect with a healthy disregard for convention.Virginia…4 min
Tatler UK|April 2018WONDERWALL‘OMG, is that a real doughnut wall?’ cried a guest as she entered the ballroom at the Berkeley and beheld the 429 doughnuts spelling out ‘Tatler’ in blue and white icing. ‘No way!’ said another. ‘This is so exciting!’ Because that’s what we are here to do, people: amaze and dazzle with edifices of deep-fried confectionery visible from space. Guests became even more starry-eyed when Tatler’s travel editor Francisca Kellett took to the stage with Strictly’s Claudia Winkleman – they cut a fine comedy paso doble. Francisca made the crowd-pleasing point that the leader of the free world is, of course, a hotelier and Claudia told stories of her days at Tatler, where she apparently survived on Ribena and Marlboro Lights. (It’s very different at Tatler now.) The Georg Jensen…1 min

Tatler UK|April 2018KEEP BALM & CARRY ON‘My knowledge goes beyond the skin to encompass overall health; after all, a clear complexion starts from the inside out’NATALIYA ROBINSONWhat makes skin truly ageless? Is it a smooth complexion, free of fine lines? Is it bright, even-toned skin that the sun hasn’t touched? Both are desirable. But actually, what really determines the age of your skin is the quality of its lipid barrier, says facial therapist Nataliya Robinson. The lipid barrier is your skin’s first line of defence; a protective layer of fatty acids, or lipids, which prevent irritation and infection. But scrubbing, peeling and over-cleansing means that many of us have damaged this natural defence, according to Nataliya. ‘Weakening the lipid barrier not only leaves the complexion feeling tight and sensitive – but it also makes the skin more…2 min
Tatler UK|April 2018Time to REVISEEven before she’d left the clinic in Harley Street, Marilyn* felt something wasn’t quite right. The appointment had been a swift 20 minutes: two jabs to her ‘nasal labial folds’ (either side of her nose), two to her ‘marionette’ (mouth to chin) lines. She checked in the car rear-view mirror, then again at traffic lights and once more when she parked up. The swelling was to be expected, the doctor had said, as well as possible bruising at the injection sites. But the right-hand side of her mouth, which had been numbed with anaesthetic, was wet to the touch. The next morning, she discovered why.‘One side of my face had completely dropped, as if I’d had a stroke,’ she says. ‘And I had this non-stop dribble coming out of my…13 min
Tatler UK|April 2018WONDER WORKERSFOR DE-PUFFINGWho Nataliya RobinsonThe lowdown Nataliya is famous for her pore squeezing, which leaves skin as clean as a whistle. But if puffiness is your issue, her new manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) hits the spot. MLD works on lymph (the fluid that carries waste from the tissues back towards the heart) and the technique includes lots of light tapping and fluttering of fingertips on the skin’s surface to encourage fluid to drain away via the lymph nodes at the jawline and behind the ears. It’s marvellous for puffy under-eyes, and the ‘pulsing’ sensation around the eye sockets really does relieve congestion. It is also recommended post-surgery to minimise swelling. But do consult your doctor. Our verdict You’ll leave looking rested and chiselled – like you’ve lost weight, even.Details £550 for a…4 min

They have claimed bold prints and pattern-du-jour chevrons, not to mention sequins and gingham. Tatler UK|April 2018THE LIFE-CHANGING POWER OF SOLO PLEASUREIn 2011, academics at Rutgers University in the US recorded what happens in the brain when a woman reaches org*sm through masturbation. Captured by an MRI scanner, the images – colourised to highlight neural activity during each stage of arousal – are spectacular: a pinkish spider web of neural activity, prestimulation, followed by great gushing clouds of red, orange and yellow as excitement builds towards climax. The research showed, for the first time, where org*sm occurs in the female brain. First, sensation builds in the sensory cortex (triggered by genital stimulation), then it spreads to the limbic system (the part of the brain responsible for emotions and long-term memory). When org*sm is reached, activity peaks in the hypothalamus – which, in the images, appears to turn white-hot with org*smic feeling. Professor…7 min

Tatler UK|April 2018THE CHANGING FACE OF HARLEY STREETIt all started in 1713 when Edward Harley married Henrietta Cavendish Holles, daughter of the Duke of Newcastle. The comparatively modest residential townhouses of Wimpole Street merged with spectacular Portland Place mansions built by the likes of the Adam Brothers and John Nash, resulting in what came to be known as the Portland Estate. And Harley Street was right in the middle of it.So how did Harley Street come to be known as the cosmetic-surgery mecca that it is today? In the early days, a social mix occupied Harley Street. Tatler UK|April 2018IN SEARCH OF A Six-PackIf you asked me why I had cosmetic surgery aged 32, I probably would have told you several different things. That our brave new world of digital oversharing made me do it. That I was pressured by an unrealistic male body image. That it was the full stop after substantial weight loss (about six stone, seven years ago). It was some of these things, but mostly it was vanity. Simple, acquisitional vanity. I had the career, the house, the car, and now I wanted the body. Specifically, a six-pack. That enviable thing that says so much without me having to say anything at all. She writes about motherhood, pregnancy and love, but at the same time wrestles with the idea of a society that lacks enough humanity. ‘It seems a strange time to watch a country go into decline,’ she says over a ruby-coloured smoothie at Mortimer House, ‘and I think if you’re a contemporary writer, you have to write about the time you live in.
